Hanging on the wall was what could best be described as a murder board with photos of faces Olivia herself knew and didn’t know. Alongside them were emails and text messages that had been printed out with large notes written in felt tip… a writing style that matched the one on the photos she’d received in the post.

Tentatively, she took out her phone and shot pictures of the entire board, as well as focusing on the individual bits of information.

And as she looked over the documents gathered, Olivia’s stomach tightened.

One of the pieces of evidence was a timeline of the doomsday cult Alexander, her brother, was a part of, detailing their movements.

She also noticed a number of potential sightings and a list of crimes that had been carried out across the entire UK. Crimes that Olivia herself hadn’t been aware of.

It was a treasure trove of evidence the likes of which she’d never seen. And she had to admit, she was impressed with the thorough investigation Michelle had carried out despite not being a detective herself.

Herself…

Liv repeated that word in her head.

Thinking about it, the time to gather all this information and the pure scale of it would at the very least require a widespread effort. There was no way Michelle had travelled all over the country to speak to people, held interviews, collated evidence, and written down her own theories on her own. Someone would have had to be helping her. The question was who?

Once she was finished taking pictures of all the notes on the board, Olivia’s eyes roamed across the room, searching for anything else she could find that might provide answers.

Her suitcase was in the corner, overflowing with clothes, and a toiletry bag sat on the dresser, neatly closed. But it was the folder on the bedside table that had her full attention.

With bated breath, she crossed the room to it, wincing slightly at the creaking floorboards. That, however, was the least of her worries, as the words written on the front of it caught her off guard.

‘DI AUSTEN’ it said in large, bold letters.

Liv’s heart raced as she pulled on some gloves and picked it up like it was an atom bomb. Urgently, she flicked through the pages, many of which were made up of photographs of her from the present day dating back years. How long had Michelle been tailing her?

Written in between the photos were a series of notes scribbled in frantic handwriting, as though the woman had an idea so ingenious, she had to get it down on paper before it fled.

It was hard to decipher everything that was written, but the implications were clearer than day.

‘Going over Rhys’ old case notes. Interested in the slag’s old cases’.

‘Olivia seemed guarded. Something she’s not telling Rhys’.

‘She found out about her brother. Proclaiming his innocence’.

‘Possibly blinding herself to the truth’.

‘Unless she’s playing a part in covering it up’.

‘Certain she had something to do with Rhys’ death’.

Olivia almost dropped the folder from her hands, disbelief flooding through her entire body, but she couldn’t tear her eyes away.
